3 Tips for Building Strong Relationships With Your Tenants

Improve your relationships with residents with these 3 simple tips.

How can you communicate better and more effectively with your residents? Starting off with a good relationship with them by communicating effectively will surely go a long way. Let’s dive into three simple ways you can make the landlord-resident relationship more special. Trust me, these will make things run a lot smoother for everyone.

1. Start calling them "residents". First off, ditch the word "tenant." I’m a huge believer in calling them “residents” instead. I know it sounds a little small but it does make a big difference. The term “tenant” can sometimes feel cold or impersonal, while "resident" feels more respectful, more like a guest in your home. And that’s exactly what they are! They’re guests who happen to be staying with you for a while.

"At the end of the day, treating your residents like guests, responding quickly, and keeping expectations clear is the recipe for smoother relationships."

2. Respond quickly and professionally. One of the most important things I’ve learned is to respond quickly. When your residents reach out, it’s crucial to answer fast, whether it’s a quick acknowledgment or a more detailed response. If you can’t fix something right away, that’s fine! Just let them know when they can expect an update.

3. Set realistic expectations. If something’s not going to get fixed right away, be upfront about it. I always tell my residents when they can expect a solution, even if it’s just an estimate. So, if you’re sending someone to handle an issue, let them know it won’t be until tomorrow, for example. This sets realistic expectations and helps them feel like you're on top of things.

At the end of the day, treating your residents like guests, responding quickly, and keeping expectations clear is the recipe for smoother relationships. These small changes can really help build a more positive and professional vibe between you and your residents.
