These steps will help you shut down your water main quickly.
In an emergency, how do you shut off your water main? Today I’ll share how you can turn off your water main so you can act accordingly in an emergency situation.
The first thing you need to do is learn where your water main is. They're usually located right around the curve on either the left or the right side of your house.
The second thing you need to do is get a water key. At 0:38 in the video, I’ll show you what a water key is. It's about three feet long, and you can get it at Lowe's or Home Depot. It’s an important piece and has a space to turn off the water main. However, if you don't have it, your next best option is to have a set of pliers—I don’t suggest it, but you can definitely do it with this tool.

The next step is to go out and take a look at the water meter. It's really important to know what you should do before even going there because if there’s a flood, you can get out and get it done quickly.
The last thing you want to do is wait till the flood happens; if it does, you can always fast forward the video above to learn the steps quickly.
